Sharon Hill Getting out of the House to Telework

It's really easy when you work from home - especially if you are an entrepreneur - to work all the time and cut yourself off from your friends, family and neighbors. That's the telework issue I struggle with the most. Today, Sunday, I knew I had to get some work done - business reading I had been neglecting. So I spent from 9am until 3:30pm going from place to place just to be in the sun, get some exercise, see other people and yet accomplish my business reading goal. I started with breakfast at… Continue

Sharon Hill Finding Telework Jobs

This may sounds really simple, but I've found several writing assignements through a Google alert. You just go to Google Alerts, and tell it what the search term is to be, how often you want to be alerted, and what email to send the alert to. My alert terms are "freelance writer wanted" and "blogger wanted." You might set up an alert for "telecommute" or "telework" or "work from home" (though that last will get you lots of less-than-legitimate business… Continue

Sharon Hill Starting Non-Profit Venture from Home

Shame on me for taking so long to post to this blog. I've been buried. I'm not only working full time and writing freelance but also writing another blog - www.NewspaperTiger.com - and now working on a grant application for a non-profit project with my son. I can't tell you all the details but the first project is to be an open source local community Web site with a historic and user-generated theme. If we get the grant I can tell you all about it then. But wish me luck - the application… Continue

Sharon Hill Recruitment Site / Job Board Devoted to Telework Jobs

Telework Recruiting Inc., www.teleworkrecruiting.com is a job board and career resource site focused solely on telecommute jobs. Here a job seeker can find job openings for work they can do from home, post their resumes and read articles and tips on work at home jobs. I'm not personally familiar with its legitimacy or success, and there is a fee (one time only, $59.95) but it is endorsed by publications and organizations that don't do so lightly. Fortune Magazine offers a testimonial as well as… Continue

Sharon Hill Telework Job Sites that Work - They're Legit

The two best job sites I know that are dedicated to telecommute job are.... Telecommute Jobs - Click here to subscribe. $79 a year will let you search jobs, but they also blast your resume to thousands of recruiters, 400 of which are focused on telework jobs. TJobs - www.tjobs.com - $15 a year to post your resume and search for jobs. I've gotten freelance writing assignments from this site. Major nat… Continue

Sharon Hill Telework Centers - Your Home Office Away from Home

If you're a teleworker, or if you want to be but your home is not equipped for it, it would be too costly to equip it (major redesign) or you just have too many folks in too crowded a condition) that doesn't mean you can't telework. Telework centers can resolve this issue for you, and help you stay in touch with the office while traveling. Telework centers are designed to keep people off the congested high-traffic highways and reduce their commute time to work. The most ambitious of these telew… Continue

Sharon Hill Setting up Your Home Office - My Home Office Choices

While some things may seem fairly obvious about a home office - you probably need a desk, a comfy chair, a computer, a printer and a phone - there is far more to it than that. In fact, many of us opt for a work station thinking it can double as a desk and are very disappointed when there really is no place to write, to collate, to spread out papers, graphs, etc - just space for a computer and a file tray. I actually have both a work station and a desk - the work station is a large corner model w… Continue

Sharon Hill Headed to DC

One of the best perks of my new job is that I get to travel about 20 weeks a year. I think that's great for someone who works at home - assuming you like to travel, of course. But it's really nice to get out and see people, especially people in my industry - media - who understand my interests, share them, and tolerate my enthusiasm and excitement about all the changes for newspapers and their readers and viewers. I'm headed to Newspaper Association of America (NAA) NEXPO (Newspaper Expo.) It's… Continue

Sharon Hill Great Networking Time - Sunday

If you're looking for work, or for clients, or just want to network for business, Sunday morning is a super good day. I'm not suggesting you pick up the phone and call a potential employer at 8am on Sunday. But an e-mail is far more likely to get a response from a business executive or entrepreneur on Sunday than a weekday. Sunday seems to be the day they play catch up and are sitting in front of their computers. Nowhere is that more true than on LinkedIn. I'm sitting here at 8am Pacific… Continue

Sharon Hill Telework From Other Than Home

Some of you who work remotely - or are considering it - may travel, or just need to get out of the house once in awhile. Have no concerns about getting your job done at the same time. There are plenty of places you can accomplish that. Besides the myriad number of Cyber Cafes or WiFi hot spots (even McDonald's) there are executives suites that are set up especially for the purpose of giving traveling workers/entrepreneurs or those who have a home office but no meeting space, to rent a profession… Continue

Sharon Hill Job Swapping to Get Closer to Home - Is it Workable?

There's a new site, still in beta, called GreenJobSwap.com . I can't decide if it's a totally ridiculous idea or if it has merit. The concept is to go to the site and post (anonymously) that you have a job that is too lengthy a commute that you'd like to give up in exchange for one that someone else has. This other job, ideally, is one that is close to your home - and, I guess, far from the home of the current worker performing that job. It's not a totally telework idea, but it's one that… Continue

Sharon Hill Some Employers Bringing Teleworkers Back to the Office

My friend and former employer Peter Zollman sent me this article from the Wall St. Journal. Peter always keeps an eye out for what's going on in the world of telecommuting. He's founding principal of media consultancy Classified Intelligence, and other than one or two administrative staff, all his contractors or employees work from their home offices or on the road. They're based not only all over the U.S. but all over the globe. WORK & FAMILY By SUE SHELLENBARGER Some Companies… Continue

Sharon Hill Handy Tool for Remote Workers, Especially Those in Media

My friend media consultant Mel Taylor, www.meltaylor.wordpress.com , told me and members of the Suburban Newspapers of America Interactive Media Alliance, about a handy camera/camcorder product. I ordered it online and had it delivered to the hotel. I'm out of town helping to conduct SNA's Spring Publishers' conference. The product is called The Flip, and it's a video camcorder that's about the same size as my Palm Treo. The really… Continue

Sharon Hill Phoenix RideShare Program In Full Swing

Metropolitan Phoenix AZ, on of the major metro areas designated by the U.S. federal government to lose road construction dollars if it doesn't clean up it's air act - quite literally - is hard at work implementing ride sharing and telework. Here's an article from Dolores Tropiano The Arizona Republic Feb. 14, 2008 10:07 AM The number of employees carpooling in metropolitan Phoenix has more than doubled over the past year, and more residents are choosing alternatives to driving their… Continue

Sharon Hill Secure Password for Your Home Office Access

One of the cleverest, and most secure tips I ever got for assigning passwords came from Tim Barbeisch of MKL.net, who advised us extensively on security for our book, "Implementing and Managing Telework." He said that you should think of some event important to you - easily recalled - and one with a date, so numbers are involved. Then you take the first letter of each word to create a password. For example, "I leave Monday morning for Suburban Newspaper of Americas' Spring Publish… Continue

Sharon Hill Are you Right for Telework?

If you're yearning to work at home but have not done so as yet, how do you know it's right for you? Or more importantly, how do you know you're right for it? In my new book, "Take This Job and Move it" I'll offer far more details about making the decision, and about showing your boss that you ARE right for telework.

But, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • How do you spend your lunch hour? Do you go off by yourself to take a quiet walk or find a sunny spot to read? O
